DUBOIS, Pa. - The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team played in the 2018 USCAA Small College Softball World Series National Championship this afternoon at 12:00 p.m. EST. The Pomeroys battled the #1 seeded Cleary University for the second time in the tournament. SMWC fell 2-1 and could not complete their fourth straight National Championship finish. Despite the tough loss, the Pomeroys have finished as USCAA National Champions three times under head coach Mark Feller and twice as USCAA National Champion Runner-Ups.

Both the Pomeroys' and Cougars pitching performances were exceptional and each defense played stout. Cleary struck first on a two-run home run by Caitlin Dormire in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Woods rallied to score a run after Kelsey Young singled up the middle to score Kerri Schrock who earlier hit a double. A close play at the plate resulted in Mariah Stout being called out on the tag which would have tied the game for the Pomeroys. SMWC could not find their nitch offensively as the Cleary pitcher Riley Thompson closed the game in fashion. On the mound, Taylor Andrew suffered the loss. She went six innings, gave up five hits, two runs, and struck out six batters. Overall, Hollie Jones and Kelsey Young led the team in hits. Young went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Jones went 2-for-4.

USCAA ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Taylor Andrew and Hollie Jones were both named to the USCAA All-Tournament team. Jones finished the tournament with six hits, a triple, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Andrew completed the tournament with three victories, 14 strikeouts, 27 innings pitched, four hits, and one game-winning RBI.
