OWENSBORO, Ky. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College dropped both games of a River States Conference doubleheader to Brescia (Ky.) on Thursday, falling 6-5 in game one and 8-0 in game two.
SMWC moves to 14-28 overall and 12-22 in River States Conference play.
Game 1 | Brescia (Ky.) 6, SMWC 5
The opener featured a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final inning.
Brescia took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second innings before the Pomeroys surged ahead in the fourth.
Hannah Boardman delivered the big swing with a three-run home run to give SMWC its first lead, and
Abbi Henderson followed with an RBI single to extend the advantage to 4-2.
The Bearcats responded in the fifth inning with three runs to regain the lead, but SMWC answered again in the seventh.
Caeden Bennett tied the game at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Carley Werremeyer.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brescia capitalized on a fielder's choice to bring home the winning run and secure the 6-5 victory.
Boardman led the Pomeroys offensively, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Werremeyer added a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored, while Henderson also drove in a run.
Jasmine Kinzer (0-1) took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs (five earned) over 6.1 innings with four strikeouts.
Game 2 | Brescia (Ky.) 8, SMWC 0 (5 innings)
In game two, Brescia used timely hitting and SMWC miscues to pull away for an 8-0 win in five innings.
The Bearcats scored an unearned run in the second inning and added two more in the third, aided by defensive errors. Brescia broke the game open in the fifth with five runs, again capitalizing on errors to extend the lead.
SMWC was limited to four hits in the contest, with
Abbi Henderson,
Caeden Bennett,
Hannah Boardman, and
Kaylyn Wheeler each recording one hit. Bennett accounted for the lone extra-base hit with a double.
Savannah Jones earned the win for Brescia, striking out 10 over five innings.
Lanna Martinez (0-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will close out the regular season on Friday, April 24, traveling to Indiana University Columbus for a River States Conference doubleheader.
