Duke's Walk-Off Homer Lifts Pomeroys To Split At Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College used late-game heroics to take game one before falling in a tightly contested game two, splitting a River States Conference doubleheader at Shawnee State on Saturday at Doc Singleton Park. The Pomeroys move to 14-26 overall and 12-20 in conference play.

Game 1: SMWC 6, Shawnee State 5 (8 inn.)

SMWC delivered one of its most dramatic wins of the season, erasing a four-run deficit with a four-run seventh inning before Bailey Duke walked it off in the eighth.

Shawnee State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and extended the advantage to 5-1 in the fourth, capitalizing on defensive miscues. The Pomeroys responded in the seventh, starting with an RBI single from Maddie Smith to score Bailey Duke. A bases-loaded walk by Kyar McVey cut the deficit to two, and SMWC took advantage of a fielder's choice and an error to plate two more runs and tie the game at 5-5.

In the eighth, Bailey Duke blasted her second home run of the game, a solo shot to center field, to secure the 6-5 win.

Jasmine Kinzer earned the complete-game victory, allowing just one earned run over eight innings while striking out five. Bailey Duke led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored, and two RBIs, while Kyar McVey added two hits.

Game 2: Shawnee State 1, SMWC 0

Game two turned into a pitcher's duel, with both teams held scoreless through six innings.

Lanna Martinez was outstanding in the circle for the Pomeroys, allowing just five hits and no earned runs over 6.2 innings. Shawnee State's Gabby McConnell matched that effort, limiting SMWC to one hit while striking out nine.

The game's only run came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Shawnee State capitalized on an error to score the winning run and secure the 1-0 victory.

Caeden Bennett recorded the lone hit for SMWC, which also drew three walks but could not generate enough offense to break through.

Up Next: SMWC continues River States Conference play on the road at Brescia (Ky.) on Thursday, April 23. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT, with game two of the doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m. CT in Owensboro, Kentucky.
