Box Score 2 TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team earned its 20th win of the season on Tuesday as they split with Missouri Baptist. The Pomeroys fell in game one, 4-2, and won game two, 2-0, to improve to 20-5 on the year.
Game 1
The first game on Tuesday at MSA in Terre Haute was a heartbreaker with the Pomeroys losing 4-2 on one swing of the bat. SMWC found itself up 1-0 heading into the top of the sixth before a grand slam by the Spartans snatched the lead. Senior Sarah Burnham tried to get the Pomeroys going again in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, her 11th of the year, but SMWC couldn't overcome the deficit and fell for just the fifth time this season.
Freshman Taylor Andrew went the full seven innings and is now 5-3 in her rookie campaign. SMWC struggled at the plate in game one with just three total hits. Burnham, junior Emma Riffe and sophomore Kerri Schrock all recorded one hit.
Game 2
The Pomeroys earned their 20th victory of the season in game two by a score of 2-0. Sophomore Stephanie Richardson went the first four innings and allowed just one hit before being relieved by Burnham for the final three innings.
Prior to Richardson being relieved, the Pomeroys took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third via an RBI single by freshman Mariah Stout that scored junior Marlee Yeager,and an RBI single by senior Kimberly Strattman that scored Schrock.
In the circle, Richardson and Burnham combined to allow just two hits, as Richardson improved to 7-1 on the year and Burnham earned her second save of the year. At the plate, Stout finished the game a perfect 3-for-3, while Burnham went 2-for-3.
The Pomeroys will be back in action this weekend with back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at SMWC. The Pomeroys will host Cleary on Saturday in a USCAA top 20 showdown, as SMWC is currently ranked #1 and Cleary is ranked #13 in the USCAA Softball Coaches' Poll. Then on Sunday, the Pomeroys will host MacMurray. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
