Box Score 2 TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team got off to a perfect 2-0 start to the 2016 season after a successful first day in Florida. The Pomeroys defeated two NCAA DII teams, Chestnut Hill and Bloomfield, on Saturday. The Pomeroys defeated Chestnut Hill 5-0 and Bloomfield 9-4.
Senior Sarah Burnham picked up her first win of the season against Chestnut Hill and her first save of the season against Bloomfield. Sophomore Marlee Yeager headlined the day at the plate with a monstrous game against Bloomfield.
Junior Emma Riffe went 2-for-4 against Chestnut Hill, scoring one run and recording one RBI. Freshman Kindra Gingerich went 2-for-2, also scoring one run and recording one RBI. The Pomeroys only scored one run in the first four innings against Chestnut Hill before a big fifth inning put the Pomeroys ahead 5-0 to seal the first victory of the season for the defending USCAA National Champions.
The second game of the day saw Yeager dominate. Yeager had a hand in every run scored in SMWC's 9-4 victory over Bloomfield. Yeager hit a home run, a grand slam and a double in SMWC's second game of the season. Yeager's 3-for-4 performance at the plate led to seven RBI's, while she herself crossed home plate four times.
The Pomeroys will now carry their 2-0 record into day two in Florida, as SMWC takes on USCAA opponent Penn State Hazelton in a doubleheader on Sunday.
