Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team defeated Brescia University, 9-0 on Wednesday, while game two of the scheduled doubleheader was called due to weather in the top of the fourth. The victory moves SMWC to 17-2 on the year.
Nine different runners crossed home plate for the Pomeroys, as SMWC scored eight of its nine runs in the top of the third inning. SMWC then tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth, while keeping the bearcats off the scoreboard to claim the 9-0 victory.
Junior Emma Riffe and sophomore Kerri Schrock went 2-for-3 on the day, while senior Sarah Burnham went 2-for-4 and junior Breanna Lange went 2-for-2. Riffe, Burnham and Lange all recorded two RBIs, while Schrock recorded one. Burnham hit her eighth home run of the season and Riffe and Lange had a triple and double, respectively.
Freshman Taylor Andrew went the full five innings picking up her fifth win of the season. She struck out five batters and allowed just two hits in the five innings of work.
Thursday's doubleheader with Oakland City has been cancelled due to weather, so the Pomeroys will now gear up for their home opener on Friday vs. Berea. Friday's home opener will be a rematch of the 2015 USCAA National Championship game, which the Pomeroys won to claim their ninth national title.
