Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team swept the NAIA's 19th ranked Marian University Knights on Wednesday to improve to 12-2 on the year. Senior Sarah Burnham led the Pomeroys to victory with her efforts pitching and at the plate. Burnham hit a home run in each game to move her season total to seven home runs and her career total to 20 home runs. She is now SMWC's career leader in home runs with 20. She passed Ashley Loomis' mark of 19 which has been the record since 2008.
Game 1
The Pomeroys scored in five of the seven innings in game one to win 7-2. Junior Camille Ulery put the Pomeroys on the board first with her second home run of the season in the top of the second. Burnham then stepped up in the top of the third and hit her sixth home run of the season to tie the SMWC career record. In the third, Burnham hit an RBI single to score senior Kimberly Strattman. Burnham still wasn't done in the sixth, as she hit a double that brought in junior Emma Riffe and freshman Kindra Gingerich. Gingerich would then top off SMWC's performance in game one with an RBI single to score sophomore Kelly Combs.
Burnham finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Freshman Taylor Andrew went the distance for the Pomeroys, striking out four batters to claim her fourth win of the season.
Game 2
SMWC's 4-3 victory in game two didn't come as easily as their first game. The Knights scored first in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. The Pomeroys then answered with one run in the second and one run in the third. Strattman doubled in the second inning to score sophomore Stephanie Richardson, while Ulery singled in the third to score Burnham.
MU quickly tied the game up with a run in the bottom of the fourth and then took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Pomeroys needed a run in the top of the seventh to have a chance, and that's when Burnham delivered her 20th career home run, a solo shot to tie the game at three. SMWC then kept MU off the board in the bottom of the seventh to force an extra inning. In the eighth, Richardson hit an RBI single to score Ulery, and the Pomeroys forced MU to go three up-three down to earn their 12th victory of the season.
Burnham earned her fifth win and is now 5-0 on the year. She finished the day 5-for-7 with two home runs and five RBIs.
SMWC will be back in action on March 22 when they head to Robert Morris-Springfield for a USCAA doubleheader.
