SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Shawnee State completed a River States Conference doubleheader sweep of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Saturday, winning game one 8-1 and game two 6-3 at the SMWC Softball Field.
In game one, Shawnee State (15-5) used a dominant third inning to take control, scoring five runs to break open a scoreless contest. The Bears totaled 14 hits in the opener and capitalized on timely hitting and defensive miscues.
Shawnee State got on the board in the second inning before erupting in the third, highlighted by multiple RBI singles and capitalizing on errors to extend the lead to 7-0. The Bears added another run in the fourth inning to make it 8-0.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (4-12) broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Hannah Boardman launched a solo home run to put the Pomeroys on the board.
Boardman led SMWC with the home run and one RBI, while
Kyar McVey added two hits.
Emma Hunter also recorded a double.
In the circle,
Lanna Martinez (2-6) took the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) over 2.1 innings.
Maci Woerner provided steady relief, allowing just one run over the final 4.2 innings.
In game two, Shawnee State once again struck early, plating two runs in the first inning, including an RBI single from Sierra Dunnagan and a steal of home.
The Pomeroys answered in the second inning when
Caeden Bennett doubled to score
Emma Hunter, cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, the Bears responded with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Kennedy Davis, extending the lead to 6-1.
SMWC made a late push in the sixth inning as
Jasmine Kinzer delivered an RBI double and Bennett followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-3, but Shawnee State held on to secure the sweep.
Bennett led the Pomeroys in game two, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Bailey Duke and
Raegan Manhart each added two hits, while Kinzer contributed a double and an RBI.
Kinzer (2-5) went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out one.
Across the doubleheader, Shawnee State combined for 20 hits and applied consistent pressure offensively, while the Pomeroys showed resilience late in game two.
