Bennett Homers as Pomeroys Drop Doubleheader to IU Columbus

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Caeden Bennett provided a bright spot at the plate, but Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College dropped both games of a River States Conference doubleheader to Indiana University Columbus on Sunday at the SMWC Softball Field on Beat Cancer Day.

The Pomeroys (6-16) fell 12-3 in game one and 12-2 in game two.

Game 1
SMWC opened the day with early power, as Bailey Duke launched a solo home run in the first inning to give the Pomeroys a 1-0 lead.

After IU Columbus responded with two runs in the second, Bennett delivered a key swing in the third inning, blasting a two-run home run to put SMWC back in front, 3-2.

The Crimson Pride (12-12) answered quickly, tying the game in the fourth before taking the lead following a defensive miscue. IU Columbus continued to build separation with runs in the fifth and sixth before pulling away with a four-run seventh inning.

Chloe Linn led IU Columbus with a 3-for-5 performance and four RBIs, while also earning the win in the circle.

Bennett and Duke accounted for all three RBIs for SMWC.

Game 2
The Pomeroys struck first again in the nightcap, capitalizing on early pressure. Libby Jaynes delivered a two-run single in the first inning, scoring Bennett and Kyar McVey to give SMWC a 2-0 lead.

IU Columbus responded with four runs in the second inning to take control and never looked back.

Bennett added another highlight moment with a hit in game two, while also appearing in the circle in relief.

The Crimson Pride extended their lead with four runs in the fourth and another four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Mallory Shelton.

SMWC was held to just three hits in the game, with Jaynes driving in both runs.

Lanna Martinez (3-8) took the loss for the Pomeroys.
