Pomeroys Sweep Midway Behind Strong Pitching and Timely Plays in RSC Action

MIDWAY, Ky. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College used a combination of dominant pitching and opportunistic offense to secure a River States Conference doubleheader sweep over Midway University on Tuesday at Clark Memorial Field, winning 2-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two.

With the pair of wins, the Pomeroys move to 6-12 overall on the season.

In the opener, SMWC relied on a complete-game performance from Jasmine Kinzer and a clutch swing from Emma Hunter to earn a 2-1 victory. After Midway took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, the Pomeroys responded in the fifth as Hunter delivered a two-run double to score Kyar McVey and Raegan Manhart.

Kinzer went the distance, allowing just one run on five hits while working through four walks and recording two strikeouts. The Pomeroys totaled eight hits in the game and added a key defensive double play to preserve the lead.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College completed the sweep in game two with a 3-2 victory, scoring all three runs in the second inning.

The Pomeroys capitalized on Midway miscues to build an early lead, beginning with Bailey Duke advancing and eventually scoring on a throwing error. Jenna Baker followed with an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch to give SMWC a 3-0 advantage.

Midway chipped away late, scoring once in the fifth and again in the seventh, but Lanna Martinez held firm in the circle. The right-hander went the full seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on 11 hits while striking out five to earn the win.

Baker led the offense in game two with a 2-for-2 performance, while Duke and Kaylyn Wheeler each added a hit and scored a run. The Pomeroys drew five walks and used aggressive baserunning to create scoring opportunities.

Across the doubleheader, SMWC pitching limited Midway to just three total runs, with Kinzer and Martinez each throwing complete games.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College returns home this weekend for a four-game River States Conference slate at the SMWC Softball Field. The Pomeroys host Brescia University (Ky.) on Saturday, March 28 for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. as part of Ring Day and Chase Bennett Tribute Day. The weekend continues Sunday, March 29, as SMWC faces Indiana University Columbus in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for Beat Cancer Day.
