SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College used timely hitting and a dominant performance in the circle to secure a 1-0 victory over Oakland City University on Tuesday evening at the SMWC Softball Field.
After four scoreless innings in a tightly contested matchup, the Pomeroys (7-17) broke through in the bottom of the fifth.
Bailey Duke delivered the game's only run with an RBI double to left-center, scoring
Kyar McVey, who reached earlier in the inning.
That single run was more than enough support for
Lanna Martinez, who turned in one of her best outings of the season. The right-hander tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing seven hits while striking out five and walking just one. Martinez improved to 4-8 on the season with the victory.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods totaled eight hits in the game, led by McVey and
Raegan Manhart, who each recorded two hits. Duke and
Hannah Boardman each added doubles, while Boardman also reached base twice.
Oakland City (23-11) threatened multiple times, scattering seven hits across the contest, but the Pomeroy defense and Martinez worked out of trouble throughout. The Mighty Oaks left eight runners on base in the loss.
Morgan Burgess (5-3) took the loss for Oakland City, allowing one run on eight hits over five innings of work.
The win marked a split in Tuesday's doubleheader, as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods dropped the opening game 8-0.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and Oakland City will meet again on Friday, April 3, in Oakland City, Indiana.
