SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team dropped both games of a River States Conference doubleheader to Brescia (Ky.) on Saturday at the SMWC Softball Field, falling 2-1 in the opener and 9-8 in nine innings in the nightcap.
In game one, Brescia plated single runs in the first and second innings and held off a late push from the Pomeroys.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (6-14, 4-8 RSC) broke through in the sixth inning when
Emma Hunter scored on an error, but the Pomeroys were unable to complete the comeback.
Hunter,
Audrey Schau,
Bailey Duke, and
Hannah Boardman each recorded a hit for SMWC, while Duke and
Caeden Bennett added stolen bases.
In the circle,
Jasmine Kinzer delivered a strong outing, allowing just two runs (one earned) on eight hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.
Brescia's Emmie Bullington earned the complete-game win, allowing one unearned run on four hits.
Game two turned into an offensive battle, with the two teams combining for 17 runs on 34 hits across nine innings.
Brescia (13-17) jumped out to an early lead and extended it to 5-2 before Saint Mary-of-the-Woods responded with a four-run fifth inning.
Abbi Henderson highlighted the rally with a two-run double, while
Caeden Bennett followed with a two-run single to give the Pomeroys a 6-5 advantage.
Brescia tied the game in the seventh inning and then regained control with a three-run ninth inning.
SMWC answered in the bottom of the ninth as
Bailey Duke launched a two-run home run, but the rally fell just short.
Duke led the Pomeroys with a standout performance, going 3-for-3 with a home run, double, three RBIs, and two walks.
Audrey Schau added three hits and three runs scored, while Bennett finished with three hits and three RBIs. Henderson contributed two hits and two RBIs in the effort.
Lanna Martinez took the loss in the circle, working all nine innings.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods returns to action Sunday, March 29, hosting Indiana University Columbus in a River States Conference doubleheader at the SMWC Softball Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., with game two scheduled for 3 p.m. The games will serve as Beat Cancer Day, with live stats available for both contests.
