Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team split its doubleheader with Indiana University Southeast on Tuesday to move to 10-2 on the year.
Game 1
The Pomeroys won the first game of the day, 7-6, in extra innings. The Pomeroys got out to an early lead in the top of the first with freshman Kindra Gingerich stealing home. The Pomeroys then went scoreless until the fifth inning, while IUSE recorded one run in the second inning and two runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead into the top of the fifth.
SMWC's first run of the fifth inning came off of an RBI double by sophomore Marlee Yeager that scored junior Emma Riffe. Senior Sarah Burnham then hit a two-run home run to give SMWC a 4-3 lead. IUSE tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth, 4-4, and then each side crossed home plate twice in the seventh to force extra innings. SMWC's two runs in the seventh came off of Burnham's second home run of the game and was the key to forcing an extra inning. In the top of the eighth, Gingerich crossed home plate for the second time and ultimately sealed SMWC's 7-6 victory, as the Pomeroys kept IUSE off the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth.
Freshman Taylor Andrew received credit for the victory after replacing Burnham in the circle in the seventh. Andrew made the most of her two innings, striking out five batters and allowing three hits. Burnham finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, and four RBIs.
Game 2
The second game of the day was another nail biter with SMWC coming up just shy, 5-4. The Pomeroys fell behind 1-0 after the bottom of the third, but then rallied to score three unanswered runs between the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of sixth inning, SMWC scored one run, to take a 4-1 lead. However, IUSE answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut SMWC's lead to one, 4-3. The Pomeroys couldn't get on the board in the top of the seventh, and IUSE came up with two clutch runs to snatch the 5-4 victory.
Junior Camille Ulery led SMWC at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance that included a double and one RBI. Sophomore Stephanie Richardson recorded the loss, her first of the season.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Marian University for a doubleheader in Indianapolis.
