Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team split with Marian University on Wednesday in Indianapolis. The Knights are currently receiving votes in the NAIA, while the Pomeroys are the top-ranked team in the USCAA. After Wednesday's clash, the Pomeroys are now 25-11 on the year.
GAME 1 (MU 5, SMWC 4)
Game one tested the Pomeroys as they found themselves behind 3-0 after the first inning. SMWC got the bats going themselves in the top of the third, with two runs off of an RBI double by junior Sarah Burnham and an RBI single by freshman Marlee Yeager. The Knights answered in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 4-2.
The Knights then added another run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, but the Pomeroys weren't done just yet. Senior pitcher Brooke Jordan led the Pomeroys through a quick bottom of the sixth to keep MU in reach entering the seventh.
In the top of the seventh with SMWC trailing 5-2, Burnham hit her ninth homer of the season which also brought in sophomore Emma Riffe. With that, the Pomeroys were within one with two outs and Yeager at the plate. However, Yeager would groundout to the shortstop to end the game.
Burnham finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with one double and one home run. She scored two runs and batted in three more.
GAME 2 (SMWC 7, MU 6)
Game two was again a nail biter, and this time the Pomeroys came up on the positive side of things due to senior Shelby Turner playing the role of hero in the seventh inning and Burnham pitching well enough to pick up her ninth win of the season.
The Pomeroys got off to a hot start at the plate as Jordan hit her third home run of the season, which scored Riffe and gave the Pomeroys a 2-1 lead after the Knights scored one run in the bottom of the first.
The Knights then jumped ahead in the fourth after two runs gave them the 3-2 advantage. SMWC again refused to go away as they tied the game up in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by junior Kimberly Strattman that scored Turner.
With the game tied heading into the seventh and the Pomeroys needing some clutch hitting from the top of their lineup, the Pomeroys came through. Riffe started off the inning with a single, followed by singles by Burnham and Yeager. With the bases loaded, Jordan popped out for the first out of the inning. Then, Turner stepped into the box and delivered a game-winning three-run double that cleared the bases and gave the Pomeroys a 6-2 lead. Junior Breanna Lange then hit an RBI single to score Turner and move SMWC's lead to 7-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Knights fought back as they took advantage of an error to score their first run of the inning and followed that up with two RBI singles to cut SMWC's lead to 7-6. With two outs, Burnham forced a pop up for the final out of the game to seal SMWC's 7-6 victory and improve SMWC's record to 25-11.
The Pomeroys will be back in action this weekend, when they hit the road to face MacMurray on Saturday and Hanover on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday's games will be the last of the 2015 regular season.
