Box Score 2 SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team closed out its 2015 home season with a season sweep of Robert Morris-Springfield. The Pomeroys eight-run ruled the Eagles twice on Tuesday to finish 4-0 against the Eagles in 2015.
Home runs were the key in both games with three home runs in the first game and two home runs in the second game. Junior Kimberly Strattman also played a key role with game-winning singles in both games. After Tuesday's sweep, the Pomeroys are now 24-10 on the year and will finish 2015 with an 8-2 record at home.
Game 1 (SMWC 8, RMU-Springfield 0)
Senior Brooke Jordan earned her 11th win of the season in game one, after striking out six batters and allowing just four hits.
The Pomeroys started off the bottom of the first with Jordan's first home run of the game, which also scored sophomore Emma Riffe who had hit a double to left field to start the inning.
The Pomeroys then added three more runs in the bottom of the second. First, junior Kimberly Strattman crossed home plate on an RBI single by junior Breanna Lange. Then a triple by Riffe combined with a throwing error led to Riffe and Lange scoring to give SMWC a 5-0 lead.
SMWC's bats then went quiet until the bottom of the fifth when back-to-back solo home runs by freshman Marlee Yeager and Jordan gave SMWC a 7-0 lead. Then a game-winning single by Strattman scored senior Shelby Turner who had reached on a single following the back-to-back home runs. It was the second time the Pomeroys had eight-run ruled the Eagles this year.
GAME 2 (SMWC 12, RMU-Springfield 4)
Game two was a little bit harder for the Pomeroys, yet they still ended up eight-run ruling the Eagles. This time it was junior Sarah Burnham picking up her eighth win of the season.
The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the first before the Pomeroys responded in the bottom of the first with one run. Scoring was freshman Kerri Schrock on a sacrifice fly by Burnham. The Eagles then scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Pomeroys responded again, this time with three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Scoring in the fourth was junior Rebecca Latta, Yeager and freshman Kelly Combs.
The Eagles tied the game up in the top of the fifth, but the Pomeroys would answer again. This time the answer came in the bottom of the sixth and ended the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pomeroys scored eight runs to eight-run rule the Eagles for the third time this season. The first run of the inning came via a solo home run by freshman Jacklyn McClain. The next four runs then came via a grand slam by Burnham that scored Riffe, Yeager and Strattman. McClain then hit in Turner and Jordan on her second go around before Strattman again hit the game-winning single that scored Combs.
The Pomeroys will now finish out the 2015 season with three road games this week before finding out where they will be seeded in the USCAA National Tournament. The first of three road doubleheaders will send SMWC to Marian University tomorrow for a 3 p.m. start.
