Box Score 2 SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team suffered its first two home losses of the season on Tuesday in a doubleheader with Missouri Baptist. The Pomeroys are now 20-10 on the year.
GAME 1 (MB 5, SMWC 4)
Game one saw the Pomeroys lead for most of the game before falling in the last two innings.
The Pomeroys got on the board first with two runs via a single by sophomore Emma Riffe that scored freshman Kelly Combs and junior Rebecca Latta. The Spartans answered with three runs in the third. However, the Pomeroys quickly regained the lead with one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth.
With the 4-3 lead and senior Brooke Jordan in the circle, the Pomeroys just needed to survive two innings to get their 21st win of the season and improve to 7-0 at home. The Spartans though had other plans, scoring one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh.
The Pomeroys had an opportunity in the sixth with junior Sarah Burnham and freshman Marlee Yeager on base, however, a ground out by Jordan put an end to the inning. SMWC then went three-up, three-down in the seventh to fall 5-4 in game one.
GAME 2 (MB 9, SMWC 7)
Game two was a heartbreaker for the Pomeroys as they again were in control of their own destiny before faltering in the later innings.
The Spartans started off the top of the first with one run, and the Pomeroys responded in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. The Spartans then had a three-run inning in the third to take a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Three runs by SMWC in the bottom of the fourth put the Pomeroys out front 5-4, a lead that would hold until the top of the seventh.
Two errors in the top of the seventh let the Spartans tie the game and ultimately force extra innings, as the Pomeroys couldn't respond in the bottom of the seventh. Another two errors in the top of the eighth led to a four-run inning for the Spartans.
The Pomeroys weren't done though. With freshman Kerri Schrock on third, Yeager hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to three. Then, Jordan hit an RBI double to score Yeager to cut the deficit to two with two outs. However, the rally ended there, as senior Shelby Turner was then forced into a pop out to second base to end the game.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Robert Morris-Springfield for a 1 p.m. start. SMWC was scheduled to play tomorrow at home vs. IU-southeast, however, that doubleheader has been cancelled.
