Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team split its doubleheader with IU-Southeast on Monday in New Albany, Ind. Both games went down to the final inning, with Sarah Burnham playing the role of hero in game one and the Grenadiers getting revenge in game two.
GAME 1 (SMWC 11, IUSE 10)
Game one was a battle from the first pitch to the last. The Pomeroys struck first with a three-run home run by junior Shelby Turner to put SMWC up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first. The Grenadiers answered though with two runs of their own.
The Pomeroys would cool down for a couple of innings, while IUSE tied the game at three in the bottom of the third. The Pomeroys quickly regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth on a double by Burnham. IUSE added one run in the bottom of the fourth, but SMWC held onto the 5-4 lead. The Pomeroys then made it an 8-4 lead after the fifth. In the fifth, it was sophomore Emma Riffe who drove in two runs and Burnham brought around Riffe with her second double of the day.
IUSE wasn't finished though. They added five runs in the bottom of the six to put the pressure on the Pomeroys. Now trailing 9-8 with two outs and two runners on, the Pomeroys were in need of saving. Burnham then hit what would be the game-winning home run that scored freshmen Kerri Schrock and Jacklyn McClain.
IUSE added one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough as the Pomeroys took home their 16th victory of the season. Burnham finished the game with two doubles, one home run and six RBI's. Senior Brooke Jordan picked up her sixth win of the season and is now 6-1 on the year.
GAME 2 (IUSE 8, SMWC 7)
Game two was again a nail biter, however, this time the victory went to IUSE. The Pomeroys and Grenadiers again exchanged blows throughout the game.
Each side scored one run in the second inning. The Pomeroys then took the lead in the top of third with two runs after an RBI single by Turner and an RBI double by junior Rebecca Latta. SMWC added one more run in the top of the fourth off of an RBI double by RIffe. IUSE answered with a run, which gave SMWC the 4-3 lead heading into the fifth inning.
IUSE had a big bottom of the fifth though, and took a 6-4 lead that SMWC would go on to tie in the top of the sixth. IUSE again answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to regain a 7-6 lead. Again the Pomeroys were in need of some seventh inning heroics. With one out, an error by IUSE's shortstop allowed J. McClain to cross home plate, however, that would be the end of the scoring for the Pomeroys. SMWC's defense now needed to hold in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. IUSE got its revenge though with sacrifice fly that scored that game-winning run.
