Box Score 2 SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team had its 10 game winning-streak snapped on Wednesday night as they were swept in a doubleheader with Missouri Baptist. The Pomeroys are now 11-3 overall.
GAME 1 (MB 5, SMWC 3)
In game one, the Pomeroys fell 5-3 after falling behind early and then allowing a home run in the bottom of the seventh.
The game started off with the Spartan's crossing home plate three times in the bottom of the first. Senior Brooke Jordan was in the circle and straightened up in the next three innings, not allowing a run and giving up just one hit.
The Pomeroys couldn't get on the scoreboard in the first five innings, leaving eight runners on with eight hits. Freshman Stephanie Richardson took over the pitching duties in the fifth and seemed to pick up where Jordan had left off.
The Pomeroys entered the top of the sixth trailing 3-0, but a good inning at the plate tied it up at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single by sophomore Ciara McClain scored junior Rebecca Latta, then a sacrifice fly to centerfield by freshman Kerri Schrock scored C. McClain. Following Schrock, junior Sarah Burnham hit a double to left to score sophomore Emma Riffe. The Pomeroys were now in business and needed a productive top of the seventh as well as a strong defense in the bottom of the sixth and seventh.
The bottom of the sixth was no problem, so the Pomeroys and Spartans entered the seventh all tied up at three. Richardson started off the inning with a single, but then senior Shelby Turner, Latta and junior Kimberly Strattman went three-up-three-down to put the burden on Richardson to force extra innings in the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans started off with a double and then a walk-off two-run home run to win game one and snap SMWC's 10-game winning-streak.
GAME 2 (MB 12, SMWC 10 – 9 innings)
The Pomeroys fell in game two on Wednesday in heartbreaking fashion, similar to game one.
This time both team's bats were much more productive. The Pomeroys scored three runs in the top of the first, while the Spartans answered with two runs. Freshman Marlee Yeager, Turner and Burnham all scored in the first with Yeager, Turner and freshman Kelly Combs picking up RBI's.
The scoring picked up again in the third when SMWC scored one run in the top of the third off of a solo home run by Yeager, her third of the year. The Spartans answered with a home run of their own, however, it was three run shot that gave them a 5-4 lead.
The Pomeroys regained the lead quickly in the top of the fourth with two runs, as an RBI single by Yeager scored C. McClain, and an RBI single by Turner scored freshman Jacklyn McClain.
With the Pomeroys back on top 6-5, they added two more runs off of a single by Burnham that scored C. McClain and Strattman. Again though, the Spartans would answer with a home run to cut SMWC's lead to 8-7.
SMWC couldn't get on the board in the top of the sixth, yet the Spartans would tie it up at eight in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Pomeroys would score the go ahead run after a single by Schrock scored Strattman. However, a solo home run by the Spartans knotted it up again and forced extra innings.
Neither team got on the board in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, the Pomeroys took a 10-9 lead off of a J. McClain single that scored Strattman. The bottom of the ninth saw the Spartans do what they did all day and that was come up big, as they came up with a walk off three-run home run to end the game and sweep the Pomeroys.
Final Line
Burnham finished the day 4-for-9 at the plate with three RBI's. She was also was credited with the loss in game two to move her record to 4-2. Yeager finished the day 3-for-7 at the plate with three RBI's and one home run. Turner finished 3-for-9 at the plate with two RBI's, and Richardson was credited with the loss in game one, which moves her record to 3-1.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on March 19, when they face Lindenwood-Belleville in a doubleheader set to start at 4 p.m. in Belleville, Ill.
