Box Score 3 Saint Mary of the Woods, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team advanced to 8-1 on Thursday after beating Waynesburg twice and Waldorf once. The Pomeroys have now won seven-straight games.
GAME 1 (SMWC 9, Waynesburg 1)
The Pomeroys started off the day with a 9-1 victory over Waynesburg. The Pomeroys started slow at the plate, recording just two runs in the first four innings. Then with the Pomeroys holding a 2-1 advantage heading into the fifth, SMWC rattled off seven unanswered runs.
Freshmen Kerri Schrock and Ciara McClain scored in the fifth, while junior Rebecca Latta, freshman Kelly Combs and junior Kimberly Strattman scored in the sixth. The Pomeroys added their final two runs in the seventh, when a double by Combs scored Latta and junior Jacklyn McClain.
Junior Sarah Burnham notched the win to move to 2-1 on the year. She retired nine batters and allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings of work.
GAME 2 (SMWC 8, Waldorf 3)
The Pomeroys faced Waldorf for the second time on Thursday and achieved a similar result. SMWC downed Waldorf 8-3, after a strong fourth inning sealed the victory.
SMWC started off early with two runs in the top of the first with Burnham and Schrock crossing home plate. Waldorf answered in the third to make it 2-2 heading into the fourth. In the fourth inning, a double by Schrock would score freshman Stephanie Richardson. Freshman Marlee Yeager followed that up with an RBI single that scored Schrock and Burnham. The last of SMWC's five runs in the fourth came from a single by C. McClain that scored Yeager.
Waldorf would answer with one run in the fifth, but it wouldn't be nearly enough. Yeager would hit an RBI single in the sixth that would score Burnham and give SMWC the 8-3 victory.
Senior Brooke Jordan went the distance and earned her fourth victory of the season, she is now 4-0 on the year. She retired nine batters and allowed six hits.
GAME 3 (SMWC 4, Waynesburg 1)
The final game of Thursday was a rematch from earlier in the day, as SMWC again defeated Waynesburg, this time 4-1.
The Pomeroys again relied on a big inning at the plate to lead them to victory. This time that inning came in the bottom of the fifth.
The Pomeroys went into the fifth inning knotted up 1-1 after each team scored one run in the second inning. Scoring in the second inning was Combs, who crossed home plate on a double by J. McClain. Burnham broke the 1-1 tie with one swing of the bat in the fifth, as she homered to score Latta and Strattman.
Waynesburg couldn't answer, and they recorded just two hits in the final two innings. Richardson went the distance to grab her second victory of the season, striking out two batters and allowing nine hits.
The Pomeroys will be back in action for their final day in Titusville, Fla., on Friday. SMWC will face Franciscan in a 3 p.m. start.
