Box Score 2 TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team swept day two of their trip to Florida, beating USCAA opponent Penn State-Hazleton, 7-0, and defeating NCAA Division II Bloomfield, 2-1. The Pomeroys are now off to a 3-1 start in the Sunshine state.
GAME 1 (SMWC 7, Penn State-Hazleton 0)
A big sixth inning gave SMWC its largest victory of the young 2015 season after the Pomeroys put four runs on the board in the sixth. The Pomeroys had a three run lead heading into the sixth inning that was built of a run in the first and two runs in the fourth.
The first inning saw freshman Marlee Yeager score off a senior Brooke Jordan single. Yeager would score her second run in the fourth inning, while sophomore Jacklyn McClain would push SMWC's lead to 3-0 as she crossed home plate in the fourth.
Scoring in the sixth inning was junior Sarah Burnham, freshman Kerri Schrock, junior Rebecca Latta and sophomore Breanna Lange. Jordan went six innings in the circle, retiring eight batters, while junior Sarah Burnham went the final inning in the circle, striking out two of the three batters she faced.
GAME TWO (SMWC 2, Bloomfield 1)
Game two against Bloomfield went right down to the final innings, but the Pomeroys were able to capitalize on errors earlier in the game to seal the victory over NCAA DII Bloomfield.
It was a pitching duel for most of the game, however, the Pomeroys did leave five runners on base in the first five innings before getting on the board in the sixth inning. Yeager started off the sixth with a double and Jordan then reached on an error. With Latta at the plate, Bloomfield's third baseman would commit another error that would allow for Latta to reach first safely and score Yeager and Jordan.
The Pomeroys carried their 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Bloomfield wasn't ready to call it a game. With freshman Stephanie Richardson in the circle, Bloomfield's first two batters singled and then the third batter doubled to cut SMWC's lead to one. Then a ground out and walk gave Bloomfield one out and two runners in scoring position. It looked like Richardson might be in trouble, but then a double play to take out the lead runner and batter ended the game and gave Richardson her first career win as a Pomeroy.
Burnham and Yeager led SMWC at the plate in game two going 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively. Burnham pitched the first four innings, allowing no runs and three hits before being relieved by Richardson. Richardson went the final three innings, allowing five hits and one run.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on March 11, when they face Bloomfield and Waldorf in Titusville, Fla.
