Smith’s School-Record Shot Put Leads SMWC Men at Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes #2

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's track and field team finished sixth (31 points) Friday at the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes #2 indoor meet, highlighted by a school-record effort from junior Jerahmia Smith in the shot put.

Washington University won the team title with 190 points, followed by Rose-Hulman (147.5), Hanover (65.5), Franklin (53), St. Norbert (33), Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (31) and Oakland City (23).

Smith placed second in the shot put with a school-record mark of 16.52 meters (54-02.50). The throw surpassed the NAIA 'B' standard and ranks as the second-best mark in the River States Conference so far this season. SMWC added two more top-four finishes in the event as junior Tristin Benskin took third at 15.21m (49-11.00) and junior Eli Cox finished fourth with a mark of 14.18m (46-06.25). Freshman Lane Milner posted a mark of 12.77m (41-10.75) to place ninth.

In the weight throw, Benskin earned another podium finish, placing third with a mark of 15.73m (51-07.25). Milner added points with a sixth-place throw of 13.46m (44-02.00), while Smith placed eighth at 13.20m (43-03.75).

On the track, freshman Jayden Hickenbotham delivered a point-scoring performance in the 3,000 meters, finishing seventh in 9:31.63. In the 800 meters, freshman Elijah Williams led the Pomeroys with a time of 2:01.02 (12th), followed by Evan Polley (2:12.93, 26th), Ethan DeHamer (2:14.80, 28th), Jaryn Patterson (2:15.39, 29th) and James Frye (2:22.24, 31st). Freshman Nathan Odle competed in the mile, placing 20th in 4:41.64.

Patterson also represented SMWC in the pole vault, placing 10th with a clearance of 3.57m (11-08.50). The SMWC 4x400 relay was disqualified. Senior Abbott Church did not record marks in the high jump, long jump or triple jump.

The Pomeroys return to action Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Rose-Hulman Classic, beginning at 3 p.m. (ET) in Terre Haute.
