TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College track and field student-athletes competed Friday at the Sycamore Open, hosted by Indiana State University at the Gibson Track & Field Complex.
Senior
Jerahmia Smith led the Pomeroys with a third-place finish in the men's college shot put. Smith recorded a top mark of
16.43 meters (53' 11") in a field that included NCAA Division I, NAIA, junior college and unattached competitors.
Indiana State's Sloan Cox won the men's shot put with a mark of
17.87 meters (58' 7.50"), while Indiana State's Ben Brown placed second at
17.65 meters (57' 11").
On the women's side, sophomore
Callee Riggle placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of
35.53 meters (116' 7"). The event was won by Indiana State's Lillian Gibbs, who posted a mark of
42.21 meters (138' 6").
Riggle finished in the top half of the 14-athlete field, which included competitors from Indiana State, Southeast Missouri, Maryville, Rose-Hulman, Washington University, Franklin, Vincennes and Health Sciences and Pharmacy.
The Sycamore Open served as a final regular-season opportunity for SMWC before Smith turns his attention to the national stage. Smith has qualified for the
NAIA Outdoor National Championships in the shot put and is scheduled to compete at
1 p.m. Thursday, May 21, in Asheville, N.C.
