Pomeroys roll to 33-10 victory at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Saint Mary-of-the-Woods gathered for the postgame breakdown Saturday at Saint Xavier High School. Captain Monte' May counted it down 1-2-3 before the Pomeroys yelled in unison "undefeated."
Undefeated. Unbeaten. Unblemished.
The Pomeroys are 4-0 after a 33-10 victory at Bellarmine; the previously 3-0 Knights were held scoreless after taking a 10-6 lead in the first quarter. as the Pomeroys made adjustments throughout the game in all facets.
Trey Jackson, who led the SMWC defense with 10 tackles (9 solo, 1 assist) and had a fumble recovery, said the key to slowing down Bellarmine's power running game was just studying all week.
"We planned all week. Every day of the week coach (Powell) was on us to watch film. We kept staying on the edge. The team just came together in the end," Jackson said.
Head coach Blaine Powell loved seeing his defense progress throughout the game.
"Our defense, once they got comfortable, they just flew around had fun," said Powell, who's up-tempo offense also began to click as the game moved forward. The Pomeroys were effective offensively on both the ground and through the air.
Patrick Perea finished with 103 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.
"It was a great team effort," Perea said. "When we're out there, it's me and those five linemen and we've got to work together as a unit. We just kept grinding out those gritty yards."
The Pomeroys came out of halftime and dominated on both sides of the ball to take control of the game. The defense began getting pressure into the backfield, and the offense was clicking.
Brennon Landry threw for 117 yards in the third quarter alone before finishing with 236 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Vernelson caught his first touchdown as a Pomeroy in the quarter to give the Pomeroys a cushion.
Tyler Vaughn extended the Pomeroys' lead with his first touchdown. The Terre Haute native had 20 yards on six carries in his first action of the season, helping the Pomeroys total 180 yards on the ground.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods took a 13-10 lead into halftime after a strong second quarter.
Landry completed a five-yard pass to Devron Johnson to cap the Pomeroys' opening drive, a 5-play, 59-yard march that put SMWC ahead 6-3.
Bellarmine was able to cap the first quarter off with a touchdown drive, however. Dylan Gough completed a pass to Brenden Reid with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.
"With a team as good as they are, it's going to take you a little bit to get in sync and feel things out," coach Powell said. "Our defensive line started filling their gaps and getting pressure on the quarterback. Jake Skinner played another big game."
The Pomeroys put together a 5-minute drive that included a pair of completions to Vernelson and first-down runs by Patrick Perea and Landry. Landry also connected with Carlos Munoz for a first down pass to the Bellarmine 22-yard line.
A pass attempt to Munoz that drew a blatant pass interference flag helped set up a 1-yard rushing TD for Patrick Perea.
The Pomeroys put together another big drive to get into field-goal range as Perea gained 16 yards from scrimmage to get his team down to the Bellarmine 16-yard line.
Drake Varns 38-yard field-goal attempt went wide left.
