WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Sprint Football team put an emphatic exclamation point on its sprint era Saturday afternoon, overpowering Calumet College of St. Joseph, 33–6, to capture the 2025 Midwest Sprint Football League Championship at Jay Barrett Field.
The Pomeroys (8–0) secured the program's second MSFL Championship in four seasons and became the first team in program history to complete a fully undefeated campaign. SMWC reached the league title game every year of its four-season run and closes its sprint football chapter with an exceptional
28–4 all-time record before transitioning to NAIA Football and MSFA competition in 2026.
SMWC controlled the championship game from the second quarter onward, backed by a balanced offensive effort and a defense that kept the Crimson Wave scoreless for the first 45 minutes.
Pomeroys Take Command
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Pomeroys broke through with a 23-yard field goal from
Connor Wardlaw at the 14:16 mark of the second quarter to cap a 10-play, 56-yard drive.
Running back
Zy'Eiar White ignited the offense from there, scoring from 15 yards out midway through the quarter to give SMWC a 10–0 halftime advantage. White carried the load with
74 rushing yards on 15 attempts and two touchdowns.
SMWC extended the margin with another dominant third quarter. White punched in his second score on a 1-yard run with 7:21 remaining before quarterback
Jeremiah Tosky struck through the air, finding
Kaden Matzke for a 25-yard touchdown to make it 24–0.
The Pomeroys opened the fourth quarter with an 8-play, 47-yard march ending in a
2-yard touchdown run by Derron Hazzard, who finished with 48 yards on 18 carries.
Calumet scored its lone touchdown with 9:14 remaining on a short run from Detrick Merriweather, but SMWC immediately answered with a rare highlight—
Kerry Lacey's 97-yard PAT return, pushing the Pomeroys to the final 33–6 margin.
Offensive Highlights
Tosky completed 12 of 24 passes for
169 yards and one touchdown, connecting on big-play strikes to
Corbyn Cleveland (3 catches, 84 yards) and
Xander Hunt (2 catches, 28 yards).
SMWC's ground game produced
148 yards and three touchdowns on 52 carries, controlling the clock and the tempo.
Wardlaw was perfect on the day, going
4-for-4 on PATs and hitting the early field goal that opened the scoring.
Defense Dominates Again
The Pomeroys' defense delivered a championship-caliber performance, allowing just
27 rushing yards on 20 attempts and holding Calumet to
139 passing yards without a touchdown.
SMWC's pressure and coverage produced key stops throughout:
Doades also averaged
43.3 yards on four punts, helping control field position.
A Four-Year Run for the Record Books
SMWC leaves the MSFL as one of its most accomplished programs:
- 27–4 all-time record
- 4 championship game appearances in 4 seasons
- 2 MSFL Championships (2022, 2025)
- 13–0 all-time on the road
- First undefeated season in program history
The Pomeroys now shift into a new era as they prepare to join the NAIA and the Mid-States Football Association beginning next fall.
