Box Score SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - On a beautiful fall afternoon, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) men's soccer team (3-1-1) hosted Brescia University (3-2-0) in a stout defensive performance by both teams. Brescia University will head back to Owensboro, Kentucky, with one additional win as they defeated the Pomeroys 1-0. This loss marks SMWC's first of the year with six games in the 2020 season.
How It Happened
1st Half: Both sides maintained strong control of the ball through the first half with the Pomeroys creating solid scoring
opportunities but were unable to capitalize. The Bearcats displayed some moments of poor judgment on the defensive side of the ball, making some questionable decisions. Despite the strong play by SMWC, they would have to settle going into the half with a 0-0 tie.
2nd Half: BU came out of the break taking control as they looked to play sharper and more disciplined than they did in the first half. A scoring opportunity came quickly on an open shot by Brescia's Sam Coxon in the 56' to take a 1-0 lead. A hard foul by Fabia Torres in the 58' earned him a yellow card but Juan Parra's shot flew high. Later in the half, Jose Parra almost had a beautiful cross shot but it flew just wide. That play was followed by a close header off a corner by Ryan Valladares that was blocked by a BU defender. When the 0's hit, the Pomeroys were handed their first loss of the season.
