SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College erupted for four second-half goals Wednesday afternoon to earn a 4-2 victory over Taylor University at McMahon Field.
The match was called with 5:43 remaining in the second half because of lightning in the area. SMWC improved to 2-3-2, while Taylor fell to 6-1-2.
After a scoreless opening half, the Pomeroys needed less than four minutes to break through.
Marc Valderrama set up
Mats Flick for the opening goal in the 49th minute.
SMWC doubled its advantage exactly two minutes later.
Ethan Johnson delivered a corner kick into the box, where
Jacob Quintana converted for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.
Taylor responded in the 57th minute when Dafe Akpoguma scored off an assist from Ethan Harris, trimming the Pomeroys' advantage to 2-1.
The Woods regained control with two goals separated by just 2:05. Valderrama found the net in the 66th minute before
Jacobo Galvez struck in the 68th, extending the SMWC lead to 4-1.
Roarke Watterson converted a penalty kick for Taylor in the 74th minute to complete the scoring.
Valderrama led the Pomeroys with a goal and an assist, while Flick, Quintana and Galvez each scored once. Johnson added an assist.
Goalkeeper
Harry Jackson turned away seven of Taylor's nine shots on goal, recording three saves during the scoreless opening half and four more after the break. Jackson stopped Watterson in the 61st minute and made his final save against Caleb Van Dop shortly before the match was halted.
Taylor finished with a 14-10 advantage in total shots, but SMWC placed seven of its attempts on goal and converted four of them. All four Pomeroy goals came during an 18:23 stretch to begin the second half.
SMWC returns to action on the road against Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT.
