ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team defeated Fontbonne on Sunday, 87-81, to improve to 11-11 on the year.

Junior Ja'Breena Gardner recorded seven steals to become the program's all-time steals leader with 227 career steals. Gardner passed Brittney Shaner's previous mark of 222 steals to become the school's top takeaway artist.

While Gardner highlighted the defensive side of the ball with her record breaking performance, senior Shelby Parmer guided the Pomeroys on the offensive end with a team-high 24 points. Gardner also chipped in 12 points, while sophomore Jordyn Lloyd had a season-high 10 points. Three Pomeroys recorded double-digit rebounds with junior Bria Hill grabbing 11 boards and senior Sierra Lopez and freshman Callan Taylor grabbing 10 each. Hill also recorded a game-high three blocks on the afternoon.

The Pomeroys found themselves in a 10-0 hole to start the game, but then scored 14 unanswered points to take the lead. The Pomeroys outscored the Griffins 30-16 in the first quarter, which would ultimately be the difference maker.

The Griffins got the best of the Pomeroys in the next two quarters, outscoring SMWC 21-19 in the second and 20-14 in the third. SMWC carried a 63- 57 lead into the final quarter and went toe-to-toe with the Griffins as each side scored 24 points, securing the Pomeroys victory.

The Pomeroys will be back in action on February 10 when they host Wilberforce in a rematch from early in the year. The Pomeroys fell to the Bulldogs back on January 8 in a heartbreaking fashion, 80-78. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Hamilton Arena and will feature LIVE video and stats via the Pomeroys LIVE Portal.
