SMWC Falls to No. 19 Cumberlands; Pomeroys Prep for Youth Day Game at Indiana State

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team could not slow down a balanced and efficient No. 19 Cumberlands (Ky.) squad on Saturday afternoon, falling 72–36 inside the Jeanne Knoerle Sports & Recreation Center.

SMWC (0-7) was led by Haley Polston, who scored nine points with a pair of three-pointers. Abigail Parker added six points and seven assists, while Aubrey Ervin went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field for six points.

Jonnaya Harris pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and dished out two assists.

Cumberlands (Ky.) used a strong start and steady scoring across all four quarters to maintain control. The Patriots shot 39.7 percent from the field and placed four players in double figures. Jaydyn Carrico led all scorers with 16 points, while Lakin Burke and Joy Kendrick each added 12.

SMWC struggled to find rhythm early, shooting 1-for-13 in the first quarter before responding with a 16-point second frame. The Pomeroys went 12-for-49 overall and 3-for-15 from beyond the arc, but generated 11 assists on their made baskets.

Cumberlands' defensive pressure forced 22 SMWC turnovers, converting them into 27 points. The Patriots also held a 32–14 advantage in points in the paint and recorded 39 bench points.

With Saturday's contest behind them, the Pomeroys now turn their focus to one of the most energetic matchups of the season. SMWC travels to the Hulman Center on Monday, Nov. 24, for an 11 a.m. (ET) tipoff against Indiana State as part of the Vigo County School Corporation Youth Day, where thousands of sixth graders from across the region will be in attendance.
