Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team fell to NCAA Division III Spalding on Wednesday night in Hamilton Arena at the Knoerle Center. SMWC's 106-74 defeat to the Golden Eagles moves the Pomeroys to 10-12 on the year.
Three Pomeroys scored double figures with Junior Grace Ziegler led the way with 23 points. Junior Shelby Parmer recorded 14 points, while freshman Tara Parmer recorded 11 points. T. Parmer led the Pomeroys on the glass with eight rebounds, while S. Parmer recorded a game-high five steals.
The Pomeroys hung around early in the first half, leading 7-4 just two minutes into the game. However, Spalding's offense would prove too much as the Golden Eagles would pull away with 10 minutes to go in the first half. The Pomeroys would get within eight, 29-21, with 5:41 to go before the Golden Eagles built a 50-33 halftime lead.
The Pomeroys weren't able to get back into it in the second half as they trailed by double-digits for the final 20 minutes. The Pomeroys shot 33 percent (25-of-77) from the field, 19 percent (6-of-32) from three-point range and 75 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line. In comparison, Spalding shot a blistering 60 percent (48-of-80), 20 percent (1-of-5) and 50 percent (9-of-18).
The Pomeroys will be back in action on February 18th, when they head to Oakland City for a rematch of December 29th. The December 29th meeting saw the Pomeroys fall 93-73 in Hamilton Arena.
