Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell to Spalding on Tuesday, 98-83, in Louisville. The Pomeroys are now 5-5 on the year and are one game into their seven-game road stretch.
Three Pomeroys combined for more than half of SMWC's offensive production with freshman Callan Taylor leading the way with 18 points. Senior Shelby Parmer notched 16 points and freshman Kristen Nestor recorded 11 points. Sophomore Tara Parmer dished out five of SMWC's 16 assists and five of the Pomeroys' 21 steals. Junior Na-Shaunda Rayford recorded five steals as well, while senior Sierra Lopez and freshman Jessica Wagers each recorded three blocks. Wagers and Lopez also led the Pomeroys on the glass with seven rebounds each.
SMWC defense continued its trend of forcing turnovers on Tuesday night, forcing the Golden Eagles to give the ball up 34 times which amounted to 25 points for the Pomeroys. 23 of SU's 34 turnovers came in the second and third quarters when the Pomeroys were firing on all cylinders both offensively and defensively.
SMWC got off to a slow start in the first quarter, trailing 37-20 heading into the second. SMWC turned it on in the second quarter as they outscored SU, 26-15. Taylor had seven second quarter points, while S. Parmer and Wagers each had five.
It was 52-46 in favor of SU heading into the break. SMWC kept it tight in the third with 17 points compared to SU's 18. The fourth quarter saw the Pomeroys put up 20 points, but it wouldn't be enough as SU added 28 to beat the Pomeroys, 98-83.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on December 18 when they travel to crosstown rival Rose-Hulman for the annual Clabber Girl Classic. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will feature live video and stats.
