Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) soccer team notched their first victory of the season on Sunday afternoon. SMWC picked up the win over Andrews University at the SMWC Soccer Field, 7-0.
Freshman Yadira Castellanos led the Pomeroys attack with three goals on eight shots. Castellanos's first goal of her career was also SMWC's first goal of the day after she took a ball from fellow freshman Kirsten Lees to give SMWC the 1-0 advantage. SMWC's second goal then came at the 33:37 mark when sophomore Cami Navarra notched her first goal of the season.
Then with 35:41 on the clock, Castellanos notched her second career goal as she headed in a corner kick from junior Kylee White to move SMWC's lead to 3-0 heading into the half.
The Pomeroys didn't waste much time in the second half as they quickly got on the board again at the 54:02 mark with a goal by sophomore Morgan Samuelson.
Then just one minute later, freshman Crystal Magadan knocked in her first career goal to make it 5-0 in favor of SMWC. In the 60th minute, Castellanos completed the hat trick with a ball from sophomore Jordan Bray that found the back of the net for Castellanos's third goal of the day.
The Pomeroys seventh and final goal came in the 71st minute when freshman Jordan DeBoy played a ball from Lees to give SMWC the final score of 7-0.
While Castellanos led the team with three goals, Lees also played a vital role with two assists on the day. Both sophomore Georgie Macy and freshman Shannon Sonderman spent time in goal, with Macy taking the first half and Sonderman going in for the second half. Neither had much work though, as Macy didn't have to defend a single shot in the first half and Sonderman only had one shot come her way, which she saved. The Pomeroys outshot the Cardinals 37-1 on the day in what proved to be an offensive showcase for SMWC.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on Wednesday, September 10 when they travel to Franklin College for a 7 p.m. start.
