SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Despite a strong defensive effort and double-digit saves from goalkeeper
Lauren Rindone, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer team came up just short in a 1-0 loss to Shawnee State in River States Conference play Saturday at SMWC Stadium.
The Pomeroys (1-13-1, 1-7 RSC) kept the match scoreless through the first half, with Rindone making key stops to deny the Bears' early chances. Shawnee State finally broke through in the 51st minute when Lucie Ashkettle found the back of the net for what proved to be the match-winner.
Rindone finished with 12 saves on 14 shots on goal to anchor the Pomeroy defense. Senior
Raelee Everhart led the SMWC attack with four shots, including two on frame, as the Pomeroys pressed for the equalizer in the closing minutes.
The match was tightly contested, with each side picking up multiple yellow cards in a physical battle.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 30, when the Pomeroys travel to Brescia University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT in Owensboro, Ky.
