COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team picked up a strong road win on Saturday afternoon, defeating IU Columbus 78–63 at Circle K Fieldhouse at NexusPark in River States Conference action.
SMWC never trailed, building a 40–27 halftime advantage and maintaining control throughout the second half. The Pomeroys shot 51.0 percent from the field for the game and limited IU Columbus to 42.9 percent shooting.
Taray Howell led all scorers with 26 points, connecting on 7-of-11 shots from the floor and knocking down six three-pointers off the bench. Howell also went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Quamar Hobbs added 14 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting performance, while
DeYon Bell posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. SMWC also received solid contributions from
Donavon Barnett, who finished with nine points, and
Mike Ajukwa, who pulled down five rebounds.
The Pomeroys held a 16-point lead late in the first half and continued to control the tempo after the break, outscoring IU Columbus 38–36 in the second half. SMWC finished with a 39–10 advantage in bench points and held a 35–22 edge on the glass.
IU Columbus was led by Trevin Lieck with 18 points, but the hosts were unable to overcome SMWC's efficiency and depth.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College returns home on Tuesday, January 6, when it hosts IU Southeast at 6 p.m. (ET) inside the Knoele Center. As part of the Holiday Break Special, all admission is free.
