Six Pomeroys Reach Double Figures in RSC Quarterfinal Battle at Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team placed six players in double figures Wednesday night but fell 101-88 to Rio Grande in the River States Conference Quarterfinals inside Newt Oliver Arena.

The Pomeroys conclude the 2025-26 season with a 14-15 overall record after earning a postseason berth in the River States Conference Tournament.

SMWC showcased offensive balance throughout the contest, finishing 36-of-72 (50 percent) from the field and 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from three-point range. Six Pomeroys scored 11 or more points in the effort.

Mike Ajukwa led the way with 21 points off the bench, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line. Malachi Pearson added 14 points, while Stanley Harley chipped in 13. Ellis Todd and Donavon Barnett each finished with 12 points, and DeYon Bell recorded 11 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Barnett was efficient in limited attempts, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, while SMWC scored 50 points in the paint and generated 20 second-chance points.

Rio Grande (16-12) built a 47-30 halftime lead behind a strong shooting first half and maintained control at the free-throw line, converting 28-of-31 attempts (90.3 percent), including 17-of-17 in the second half. Delon McCloud paced the RedStorm with 34 points, including six three-pointers.

SMWC shot 53.7 percent in the second half and cut into the deficit late, but the early margin proved too much to overcome.
