Versailles, Ky. -- Saint Mary-of-the-Woods junior
Thomas Chapman broke the SMWC 8,000-meter record with a time of 26 minutes, 11 seconds Saturday at the RSC Preview Meet, earning a fourth-place finish on the Woodford County Park course.
"First mile was a little bit feeling out process, just trying to get a good spot," Chapman said. "And then second and third was just toughing it out. The last mile was just everything I had from previous workouts, mentality and all that, just pushing it as hard as I could."
SMWC placed seventh out of nine teams at the meet, which was won by Indiana East with 26 points. SMWC posted a 198 as No. 2 runner
Jonathan Hayden placed 48th, followed by seniors
Braeden Heaton (62nd) and
Nathan McIntyre (65th).Â
The SMWC women's cross country team ran shorthanded Saturday, with senior
Emma Lynch and sophomore
Abbigael Coyle the only runners able to compete.Â
Coyle, who has been nursing an injured ankle, placed 36th in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 27:27.1. Lynch was 57th in a time of 29:43.7.Â
