Box Score Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and Calumet College of St. Joseph had already played one overtime sprint football contest to start the 2022 season and a second OT game became increasingly likely when the Pomeroys tied the game at 27-27 in the fourth quarter Saturday at Jay Barrett Field.
SMWC won the season-opener 34-28 in OT, but the second matchup is the one that counts toward the Midwest Sprint Football League standings.Â
Kerry Lacey's 6-yard touchdown run evened the score with seven minutes, 20 seconds remaining, but
Drake Varns' extra-point attempt was wide left.
CCSJÂ drove into SMWC territory with a 7-play, 46-yard drive. The SMWC defense was able to stall the Crimson Wave offense, but Jared Saez's line-drive kick caught the cross bar and ricocheted through the uprights to put CCSJ ahead 30-27 with 3:54 remaining.
The SMWC offense had time to make one more drive, but
Brennon Landry was intercepted by Quindarius Davis to clinch the Crimson Wave's 30-27 victory in Midwest Sprint Football League action.
It was a battle of 3-0 MSFL teams that gives the Crimson Wave a leading chance to host the MSFL championship game on Nov. 5.
For SMWC, the Pomeroys' offense battled inconsistency Saturday. The Pomeroys took a 7-0 lead on their opening drive with
Patrick Perea converting a 3-yard TD run. Perea then put SMWC ahead 14-3 on a halfback pass to
Corbyn Cleveland for a 54-yard scoring play early in the second quarter.
But it was all Crimson Wave the remainder of the first half.
Elijah Antis broke free for a 40-yard TD run and Claijuan Cash caught a 24-yard pass from Blaze Cano to help CCSJ take a 17-14 lead.
SMWC's offense struggled to sustain a drive in the second quarter. In the third quarter, SMWC had turnover problems derail drives.
Perea lost a fumble early in the third quarter, and with 3:05 left in the third quarter, Landry was sacked by Josh Tejeda, who also forced and recovered the fumble on the play. Four players later, Jonathon Flemings powered into the end zone for a 27-14 lead for CCSJ.
Landry was 13 for 25 for 91 yards and an interception for SMWC.
Perea rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown to go with four receptions for 48 yards.
Flemings rushed for 147 yards on 31 carries for CCSJ, which finished with 241 yards rushing.
"You can't turn it over in a game like that," coach
Blaine Powell said. "They did a really good job, they just had the one early. Of course you're disappointed we lost. They're a really good team and we knew that coming in. We're contrasting styles. [CCSJ] does a good job in that scheme defensively. They have good defensive ends that are bigger, thicker guys and they're able to play four in the box and play seven in coverage. They're a big, physical team. I think we'll make the necessary adjustments."
SMWC plays its regular-season finale at Fontbonne next Saturday.
Starting middle linebacker and co-captain
Jake Skinner left the game in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.
Landry also left the game with an apparent knee injury following a play on the final offensive drive for SMWC. They'll be evaluated in the coming days, Powell said.
