Pomeroys Fall in Overtime Clash with Bulldogs

Box Score

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell to Wilberforce, 108-104 in overtime at the Knoerle Center.

It was the second time the Pomeroys had fallen to the Bulldogs and the second time that it went down to the wire. The first meeting near the beginning of the new year was a two-point game that went the Bulldogs way. Wednesday's game played out in similar fashion with WU taking the lead late in the fourth and ultimately winning in overtime.

Junior Ja'Breena Gardner scored a season-high 24 points and pushed her double-digit scoring streak to seven games. Senior Shelby Parmer recorded 15 points, sophomore Tara Parmer scored 12 points and sophomore Jordyn Lloyd scored 10 points. Lloyd also led SMWC on the board with nine. Defensively, it was Lloyd leading the way again as she recorded a career-high five steals.

The Pomeroys and Bulldogs went point for point in the first and third quarters, while SMWC had the advantage in the second quarter and WU won the fourth quarter. Each side put 24 points on the scoreboard in the first. The Pomeroys then followed that up with a 32-28 advantage in the second, to go into halftime leading 56-52. In the third quarter, each team put up 27 points to send the game to the fourth quarter with SMWC leading 83-79.

The fourth quarter saw the game tied up on four occasions in the first seven minutes of play before WU took the lead with 3:04 left in the game.  With 2:25 to play WU held the lead 98-93 when S. Parmer made a pair of free throws to pull SMWC within three, 98-95. SMWC's defense held and gave senior Grace Ziegler an opportunity to tie the game up with 16 seconds left, which she took advantage of by burying a three-pointer from in front of the Pomeroys' bench to send the game to overtime.

The Bulldogs jumped out early in overtime, and although the Pomeroys stayed within striking distance, they couldn't get back on top and fell 108-104.

The Pomeroys will be back in action on February 13 when they host Southern State on senior day. On Saturday, the Pomeroys will honor the careers of seniors Grace Ziegler, Shelby Parmer and Sierra Lopez. The game is scheduled to tip at 2 p.m. in Hamilton Arena.
