PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell on the road Saturday afternoon, 82-36, to Shawnee State inside Waller Gymnasium.
The Pomeroys held an early 2-0 lead and were within two points midway through the opening quarter before the Bears (19-7, 10-4 RSC) used a strong second quarter to create separation. Shawnee State outscored SMWC 28-6 in the second frame to take a 47-12 advantage into halftime.
SMWC showed resilience in the third quarter, turning in its most productive stretch of the afternoon. The Pomeroys shot 40 percent (6-of-15) from the field in the period, including three made 3-pointers, and scored 19 points.
Talyssa Moody led SMWC with 13 points, connecting on 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Samara Douglas added six points and five rebounds, while
Haley Polston and
Nadiya Figures each pulled down five or more rebounds.
Confidence Nwachukwu contributed a team-high seven boards off the bench.
As a team, the Pomeroys shot 21.7 percent (10-of-46) from the field and 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from 3-point range. SMWC recorded 33 rebounds and received 11 points from its bench.
Shawnee State was paced by Laken Williams with 17 points, while Miyoshi Ellis added 15 points and seven rebounds. The Bears shot 43.2 percent from the field and forced 33 SMWC turnovers, converting them into 29 points.
SMWC returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 17, when the Pomeroys travel to Oakland City for a 6 p.m. (CT) River States Conference matchup.
