Box Score WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The eighth-ranked Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team fell in their meeting with NAIA foe Wilberforce on Thursday night, 100-79. The Pomeroys are now 10-11 overall, yet remain undefeated in the USCAA.
The Pomeroys were led by junior Grace Ziegler, who recorded a team-high 16 points. Fellow junior Shelby Parmer wasn't far behind with 14 points, while sophomore JaBreena Gardner added 12 points. Gardner recorded a team-high three assists. Junior Sierra Lopez was one point and one rebound away from a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Pomeroys trailed 55-39 at halftime after being outshot across the board in the first 20 minutes. SMWC shot 33 percent (15-of-45) from the field, 28 percent (5-of-18) from beyond-the-arc and 57 percent (4-of-7) from the free throw line. In comparison, the Bulldogs shot 56 percent (22-of-39), 50 percent (3-of-6) and 73 percent (8-of-11).
The Pomeroys played better in the second half, but it was too little too late as they were outscored 45-40 in the final 20 minutes to fall 100-79. The Pomeroys lost the turnover battle on Thursday night, which has been a rare occurrence for SMWC. The Pomeroys gave the ball away 19 times compared to the Bulldogs' 17 turnovers. The Pomeroys were outrebounded 61-50 on the evening and were outscored 70-34 in the paint.
The Pomeroys finished the game shooting 32 percent (27-of-83) from the field, 23 percent (7-of-30) from beyond-the-arc and 58 percent (18-of-31) from the free throw line. In comparison, the Bulldogs finished the game shooting 48 percent (43-of-89), 30 percent (3-of-10) and 65 percent (11-of-17).
The Pomeroys will be back in action when they host NCAA Division III Spalding in an important showdown on February 11 in Hamilton Arena at the Knoerle Center.
