ELGIN, Ill. — The
Maverick Harris era of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball began on a high note Saturday as the Pomeroys earned an
85–82 road win over Judson University inside the Lindner Center.
In his debut as SMWC head coach, Harris guided SMWC (1–0) to a fast-paced victory that saw five players score eight or more points and a team shooting percentage of 44.2 percent from the field.
Taray Howell led the way with
20 points, including four three-pointers and six assists, while
Christopher Owens added
17 points and four rebounds.
Ikechi Ajukwa chipped in
13 points and five rebounds, and
Jared Bonds provided a strong lift off the bench with
nine points and six boards.
The Pomeroys led 42–39 at halftime and maintained a narrow edge throughout the second half despite multiple lead changes. SMWC out-rebounded Judson 42–39 and recorded 18 points off turnovers to help seal the win.
Judson (0–2) was led by
Fernando Perez Jr. and
Hunter Duncan, who each scored 14 points.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will now make its
home debut on Tuesday, November 4, hosting Judson in a rematch at
4:00 p.m. (ET) inside the
Knoerle Center.
