SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team rebounded from its first loss since November earlier in the week to take down visiting Midway (Ky.) by the score of 89-70 inside the Knoerle Center on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 18).
SMWC improved to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in River States Conference play while Midway fell to 5-9. The Pomeroys will embark on a key two-game road swing when they travel to West Virginia Tech on Thursday, January 23. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. (ET) tipoff.
Greg Jenkins continued to lead the way for the Pomeroys as he hit 10-of-18 from the field and was 8-of-9 at the free throw line to score 28 points while adding six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Jared Bonds tallied 15 points with six rebounds while battling foul trouble for much of the contest. Off the bench,
Taeron Hogg connected on a pair of 3-pointers for 12 points and
Taray Howell posted 11 points in the win.
SMWC held a 46-26 edge on the glass and used 15 offensive rebounds to score 16 second chance points. They recorded eight steals and converted them into six points during the game.
Caleb Iheukwu paced the Pomeroy efforts on the boards with 14 caroms while
DaMeriz Merriweather posted seven to go with nine points.
The Pomeroys led by 11 points on two separate occasions in the opening 20 minutes but a late run in the final moments before halftime sent SMWC into the break with a 37-34 lead.
The lead shrunk to just one early in the second half until
Caleb Iheukwu scored inside to restore a 39-36 advantage.
Jared Bonds answered a bucket from Midway with a 3-pointer as the clock ticked under the 18 minute mark to make it 42-38.
Jenkins would cap a 6-0 Pomeroy run with just over 15 minutes remaining as SMWC led 50-42. SMWC would put together a pair of 6-0 spurts midway through the second half and had stretched the cushion out to 79-57 with 6:22 remaining on a 3-pointer from Howell.
SMWC would lead by as many as 23 points on four different occasions in the final five minutes before eventually wrapping up the 89-70 victory.
