Kerrie James-Hunter joins the SMWC Women's Basketball staff with years of DI and DII coaching experience. James-Hunter spent time on the coaching staffs of Kent State, Lewis University and Canisius University between 2009 and 2016.
She makes a return to coaching at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
"I'm extremely excited for this opportunity to return to the coaching sidelines. The opportunity to work with the SMWC Women's basketball program is something I am truly looking forward to," James-Hunter said. "I would like to thank Head Coach Terry Bowe and Athletic Director Ron Prettyman, for affording me this opportunity to help develop our Women's basketball student-athletes, both on and off the court. Looking forward to hitting the ground running, with these ladies and staff."
James-Hunter and head coach Terry Bowe will have a strong core of returning players in 2022-23. The Pomeroys will showcase their team Monday evening at Knoerle Center along with the men's team to celebrate the start of practice with Pomeroy Mania.
James-Hunter is a 2007 graduate of Kent State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine and Professional Arts, with a major in sports management and a minor in marketing. She completed her master's in Organizational Leadership from Lewis University. James-Hunter was also a four-year letterwinner at Kent State University and played in 104 career games and earned Academic All-MAC honors following a senior season in which she was also the only player to start all 28 games. James-Hunter was considered one of the top defenders on the team. In four seasons with James (Hunter), the Golden Flashes went 76-41.
While at Kent State University James (Hunter) became the first director of basketball operations in program history. Where she coordinated the day-to-day operations of the women's basketball office and served in an academic supervisory role for the players. James (Hunter) helped Kent State to the Women's National Invitational Tournament in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
In 2012-13, Kerrie helped guide the Lewis University Flyers to an overall record of 24-6 record, which was the best turn around in Division II, after the Flyers went 8-20 in 2011-12, prior to her arrival. The Flyers were ranked as high as No. 20 in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll, as well as earned the GLVC automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after capturing the 2012-13 conference title.
The Flyers put together a 23-6 mark in 2013-14 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. Lewis defeated UMSL in the opening round for just the second NCAA Tournament win in program history.
During the 2014-15 season, the Flyers continued with their success, being ranked as high as #1 in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll for several weeks, since 2009. Lewis advanced to the Elite 8 that season.
The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native now resides in Terre Haute, IN with her husband Mike Hunter, and has a stepdaughter, Kendall Hunter.
