LA CROSSE, Wis. — Lauren Gill scored twice and assisted on a third goal as the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer team generated a season-high three goals in a 6-3 loss to Viterbo University on Saturday afternoon.
Gill led the Pomeroys' attack with five points, placing four of her team-high five shots on goal.
Riley Sabath added a goal as SMWC put six of its eight shots on frame.
Viterbo (3-4) built an early advantage with goals in the first and second minutes before extending its lead to 3-0 in the 12th. SMWC began creating opportunities midway through the opening half, with
Mya Kurtz forcing a save in the 19th minute.
The V-Hawks added goals in the 29th and 35th minutes, but the Pomeroys answered just 20 seconds after Viterbo's fifth goal. Gill found the net in the 35th minute to put SMWC on the board.
Gill continued to pressure the Viterbo defense before halftime, placing two more shots on goal in the final seven minutes of the period.
SMWC (2-6) carried that offensive momentum into the second half. Gill delivered a corner kick in the 47th minute and connected with Sabath for a goal 15 seconds later, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Pomeroys held Viterbo without another goal for nearly 40 minutes before the V-Hawks scored in the 86th. Gill provided the final tally of the afternoon in the 90th minute, completing her two-goal performance and giving SMWC a 2-1 advantage on the second-half scoreboard.
Priscilla Barajas recorded six saves in the opening half, while
Addison Emberton stopped four shots after halftime. The Pomeroy goalkeepers combined for 10 saves.
SMWC returns to action Sunday, Sept. 27, when it visits Harris-Stowe State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT in St. Louis.
