SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Lauren Gill scored twice and goalkeeper
Cileen Saif recorded nine saves as the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer team defeated Governors State University 3-0 Monday evening at McMahon Field.
The victory improved the Pomeroys to 2-5 on the season.
Saif kept the match scoreless during an active opening half, making four saves as the Jaguars generated seven shots and four corner kicks. SMWC also placed four of its seven first-half attempts on goal, but the teams entered halftime tied at 0-0.
The Pomeroys wasted little time breaking through after the intermission. Gill tested Governors State goalkeeper Hannah Mailander 14 seconds into the second half, and
Mya Kurtz followed with another shot on goal less than a minute later. Gill then put SMWC ahead in the 47th minute, scoring the eventual game-winner at the 46:16 mark.
Gill struck again just over five minutes later. Kurtz provided the assist on the goal at 51:21, giving the Pomeroys a 2-0 advantage.
Governors State attempted to answer, but Saif stopped Rylan Malachinski moments after Gill's second goal and later denied Zoraya Marquez in the 60th minute. Saif made five second-half saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Mira Atari completed the scoring in the 76th minute, finishing a combination created by
Riley Sabath and
Ella Cox to extend the lead to 3-0.
Gill led the SMWC attack with two goals on seven shots, including five attempts on frame. Atari scored on her lone shot, while Kurtz, Sabath and Cox each recorded an assist. The Pomeroys finished with 18 shots and placed 12 on goal.
Governors State held a 21-18 edge in total shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, but Saif stopped all nine attempts placed on frame to earn the shutout.
SMWC returns to McMahon Field on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when it hosts Anderson University (Ind.) at 5 p.m. ET.
