SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer broke through in a big way Saturday afternoon, scoring twice in the opening half and adding four more after the break to defeat Calumet College of St. Joseph, 6-0, at McMahon Field.
The victory moved the Pomeroys to 1-5 on the season. SMWC dominated the offensive numbers, outshooting Calumet 29-6, including a 20-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Ella Cox wasted little time getting the Pomeroys on the board, scoring just 1 minute, 43 seconds into the contest off an assist from
Lauren Gill.
Daisy Armitage doubled the advantage with only 17 seconds remaining before halftime, finishing a feed from
Mira Atari to send SMWC into the break with a 2-0 lead.
SMWC continued to apply pressure in the second half. Cox struck again in the 59th minute off an assist from
Riley Sabath for her second goal of the afternoon.
Atari followed with a pair of goals as the Pomeroys pulled away, while Sabath capped the scoring in the 73rd minute. Cox and Atari each finished with two goals, while Sabath recorded a goal and two assists. Cox also added an assist, giving her five points in the victory.
Armitage added a goal, Gill recorded an assist and Atari contributed an assist in addition to her two-goal performance.
Blair Pope earned the shutout in goal for SMWC, making three saves over 90 minutes. The Pomeroy defense held Calumet to just three shots on goal and six total attempts.
SMWC finished with seven corner kicks and placed 20 of its 29 shots on frame. Calumet goalkeeper Addison Wheelock made 14 saves in the loss.
