SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball continued its unbeaten start Saturday, sweeping Mount Mary University 25-10, 25-10, 25-12 at the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center.
The Pomeroys improved to 11-0 with the victory, overpowering the Blue Angels in nearly every statistical category. SMWC finished with 31 kills and only five attack errors for a .342 hitting percentage while holding Mount Mary (1-6) to 12 kills and a minus-.085 hitting percentage.
Leah Luevanos led the balanced SMWC attack with a match-high seven kills.
Raimey Owens and
Alexa Orozco added four kills apiece as 12 different Pomeroys recorded at least one kill.
SMWC set the tone by hitting .370 in the opening set, recording 11 kills with only one error in a 25-10 victory. The Pomeroys followed with another 25-10 decision in the second before producing their best offensive set of the match in the third. SMWC hit .429 with 11 kills and two errors to complete the sweep, 25-12.
The Pomeroys also applied consistent pressure from the service line, finishing with 11 aces.
Natalie Knigga led the effort with four aces, while
Selena Sosa added three.
Ayiana Nieves and
Marianna Ayala-Ortiz directed the offense with 10 assists each. Nieves also collected four digs and an ace, while
Ariana Cruz-Gonzalez contributed three assists.
Defensively, Sosa paced SMWC with eight digs. Knigga added four digs to accompany her four aces, and
Kia Knox-Dawkins led the Pomeroys at the net with two blocks. Luevanos and Orozco each added one block.
SMWC finished with advantages of 46-15 in total points, 31-12 in kills, 11-3 in aces, 4-0 in blocks, 29-12 in assists and 33-22 in digs.
