SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball remained unbeaten Saturday with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-14 sweep of Wright State-Lake University at the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center.
The Pomeroys improved to 12-0 with their second victory of the day during the Showdown in the Woods, presented by the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau.
SMWC controlled the match at the service line and the net, finishing with 15 aces and nine blocks. The Pomeroys recorded 39 kills with a .267 hitting percentage while limiting the Lakers (2-3) to 14 kills and a minus-.021 hitting percentage.
Kia Knox-Dawkins led a balanced SMWC attack with nine kills.
Makia Hassebrock added eight kills, while
Raimey Owens finished with six.
Leah Luevanos led the defensive effort at the net with four blocks. Owens and
Luci Morris contributed three blocks apiece.
Daniella Zvonar served a match-high four aces and added seven digs.
Ayiana Nieves and
Natalie Knigga recorded three aces each as eight Pomeroys registered at least one ace.
Marianna Ayala-Ortiz directed the offense with 17 assists and added nine digs. Nieves contributed 12 assists, while
Selena Sosa anchored the back row with a match-high 18 digs.
SMWC opened the match by hitting .367 with 14 kills in the first set. The Pomeroys also recorded 14 kills in the second before closing the sweep with 11 kills and a .296 hitting percentage in the third.
The Pomeroys held advantages of 39-14 in kills, 15-4 in aces, 9-2 in blocks, 35-9 in assists and 59-41 in digs.
SMWC concludes the Showdown in the Woods on Sunday with two matches at the Knoerle Center. The Pomeroys face Alice Lloyd College at 12:30 p.m. before meeting Wright State-Lake again at 2:30 p.m. Live video and statistics will be available at SMWCAthletics.com.
