SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Three Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball players reached career milestones Friday as the Pomeroys swept Johnson University (Tenn.) at the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center.
Karla Melendez Martinez recorded her 1,000th career kill,
Ariana Cruz-Gonzalez collected her 1,000th career assist and
Leishmarie Virella reached 1,000 career digs during SMWC's 25-16, 25-13, 25-8 victory.
Virella, who contributed two service aces in the win, is also the Pomeroys' all-time career leader in service aces.
The milestone-filled victory improved SMWC to 10-0 while Johnson fell to 1-6.
Melendez Martinez led the Pomeroys with 11 kills and completed a double-double with 11 digs. She also recorded two service aces and two blocks.
Ryan Canter added eight kills, while
Masa Pesic finished with seven kills and a team-high three blocks.
Cruz-Gonzalez distributed 15 assists as part of SMWC's two-setter attack.
Lily Richards led the Pomeroys with 18 assists and added 10 digs, while
Gaby Fernandez paced the defense with 16 digs.
SMWC controlled the match from the opening set and became increasingly efficient as play progressed. The Pomeroys hit .200 in the first set, .314 in the second and .406 in the third. SMWC finished with 43 kills and a .304 attack percentage while limiting Johnson to 16 kills and a minus-.082 hitting percentage.
The Pomeroys also held advantages of 6-0 in service aces, 7-2 in blocks and 52-38 in digs.
SMWC returns to action Saturday with two home matches at the Knoerle Center. The Pomeroys face
Mount Mary University at 3 p.m. before meeting
Wright State Lake University at 7 p.m.
