GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Marc Valderrama scored in the eighth minute, and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team delivered a strong defensive performance to defeat Georgetown 1-0 Sunday at Toyota Stadium.
The victory was the first of the season for the Pomeroys, who improved to 1-0-1 following a season-opening draw against Goshen.
Valderrama provided the decisive moment just eight minutes into the match, giving SMWC an early advantage it protected for the remainder of the afternoon.
Georgetown increased its offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Pomeroys 8-4 after intermission. SMWC responded with five second-half saves and finished with six overall to preserve the shutout.
The Tigers held an 11-6 advantage in total shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, but the Pomeroys put all six of their attempts on goal.
SMWC continues its road trip Wednesday, Aug. 26, against Judson University in Elgin, Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT.
