Pomeroys Sweep Midway In Pair Of Extra-Inning Thrillers

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball picked up a dramatic doubleheader sweep over Midway on Tuesday at SMWC Softball Field, winning Game 1, 8-7, in 11 innings before rallying for a 9-8 walk-off victory in nine innings in Game 2.

With the sweep, the Pomeroys improved to 9-21 overall.

In the opener, SMWC erased a 3-0 deficit with a six-run third inning and then answered again after Midway climbed back in front late.

Jenna Baker paced the Pomeroys at the plate in Game 1, going 4-for-6 with an RBI, while Raegan Manhart finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Bailey Duke added two hits and two RBIs, including a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the seventh that knotted the score at 7-7 and forced extra innings.

After six strong innings in relief from Jasmine Kinzer kept Midway from pulling back ahead, the Pomeroys delivered the winning run in the bottom of the 11th. Manhart came around to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hannah Boardman, sealing the 8-7 win.

Kinzer earned the victory in relief, allowing just one earned run over six innings while striking out four.

Game 2 brought even more drama.

Midway jumped out to an 8-4 lead through four innings, using a six-run second inning and home runs from Molly Wooldridge and Randi Delong to build the cushion. But Saint Mary-of-the-Woods chipped away the rest of the night.

The Pomeroys got four hits from both Kyar McVey and Manhart in the nightcap, while Hannah Boardman went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, including a solo home run in the fifth. Jazlynn Ward added two doubles and an RBI, and Maddy Helmkamp collected three hits.

SMWC cut the deficit to 8-6 by the end of the sixth before tying the game in the seventh on RBI hits from Abbi Henderson and McVey.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Pomeroys completed the comeback. Helmkamp scored the winning run on an RBI single by Manhart to give Saint Mary-of-the-Woods the 9-8 victory and the sweep.

Kinzer again earned the win in relief in Game 2, tossing five shutout innings and allowing just five hits with three strikeouts.

For the day, Manhart went a combined 7-for-12 with four runs scored and two RBIs, McVey finished 6-for-11 with two RBIs, and Boardman drove in four runs across the two games.

SMWC returns to action Thursday, April 9, when it hosts Kentucky Christian for a doubleheader on Family Day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET), with Game 2 set for 3 p.m. (ET) at SMWC Softball Field.
